St. Stephen's Church

Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr who was stoned to death, is commemorated at the Church of Saint Stephen. Patriarch Euvenalus built this church and brought the relics of Saint Stephen from Beit Jamal, west of Jerusalem, where he was born and initially buried. The current church stands on the site of the original large church constructed during the time of Emperor Theodosius, which was later demolished.
