The Russian Museum in Jericho was opened in 2011 by decree of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. It is considered a key architectural landmark in the city, housing archaeological artifacts uncovered by a Russian excavation team on land owned by Russia.
The museum features two main galleries showcasing Byzantine and Greek antiquities, as well as a collection of early 20th century photographs of Russian pilgrims in the Holy Land. It also contains Greek royal coins, Byzantine columns, and chronologically-organized ceramic and stone artifacts. Replicas from the Hermitage Museum in Russia are also on display.
The museum's walls are adorned with reconstructed Byzantine-era mosaics. Its grounds include a 2,000-year-old sycamore tree, the same one Zacchaeus climbed to see Jesus, which was integrated into the museum site in 2010.
