Hebron University

The idea of establishing a university in the city of Hebron evolved in the minds of a group of its conscious youth headed by the late, His Eminence Sheikh Mohammad' Ali Al-Ja'bari, Mayor of Hebron at that time, after the rest of Palestine fell into the grip of the Israeli occupation in 1967 A.D. The Palestinian people at that time were in a state of shock as they saw Palestine occupied as a whole, and the Palestinian youth began to suffer significantly from the occupation measures that were restricting the opportunities for Palestinian students, to enroll in universities outside Palestine in the absence of any Palestinian institution of higher education inside Palestine at that time. Therefore, the university was established in 1971 A.D., as the first institution of higher education in Palestine to solve this dilemma, to address the occupation measures, and to provide an opportunity for Palestinian students, especially females, to pursue their academic achievement. The university began its journey by establishing the College of Islamic Law as the first scientific institution for university education in Palestine in 1971 A.D., where forty-three male and female students from different parts of Palestine attended. Since then, the university has been developing and expanding, as it currently includes ten colleges, in addition to the College of Graduate Studies. These colleges are Sharia (Islamic Law), Arts, Finance and Administration, Agriculture, Science and Technology, Law and Political Science, Nursing, Information Technology, Education, Pharmacy, and Medical Sciences. The university also grants diploma degrees through the College of Professions and Applied Sciences. The university offers 77 academic programs, including four intermediate diploma programs (two years), 60 bachelor's programs, one higher diploma program, 12 master's programs, and two doctoral programs, in addition to 11 vocational programs in the specialized professional diploma, offered through the Department of Continuing Education and Community Development.
