Al-Sultan Pool

Al-Sultan Pool

The Sultan's Pool is situated south of the Ibrahimi Mosque, in the heart of the Old City of Hebron. It is one of the city's most significant landmarks, surrounded by neighborhoods such as Qaytun, Al-Mashariqah Al-Fouqa, and Al-Tahta.

This pool was constructed in 1283 AD, upon the orders of the Mamluk Sultan Al-Mansur Qalawun. It covered a large surface area of approximately 1.5 dunams, with a square shape and a side length of around 40 meters. The depth of the pool was approximately 25 meters, earning it the name "Sultan's Pool."

The pool was originally built to provide water for the pilgrims journeying from the Levant and Northern Palestine to the Hijaz lands. It also served as a crucial water source for the residents of Hebron and its visitors, as well as a hub for social gatherings and cultural exchange between the local population and visitors.

Regrettably, the Sultan's Pool is currently in a state of neglect, and its water has dried up due to its location within the scope of the Israeli occupation. The pool is owned by the Islamic Awqaf.
