Maqam of Sheikh al-Qatrawani, Atara town (Shrine)
The shrine is located between Birzeit and Atara, 2 km west of Khirbet Tarfin, and 3 km north of Birzeit. It is attributed to Sheikh Ahmad al-Qatrawani, a revered saint, the shrine may be a later adaptation of the name Saint Katrina. It is situated on Dahrat Hamouda hill, surrounded by oak and carob trees, and occupies an overlooking position. The site includes the remains of a shrine constructed on the ruins of an old Byzantine monastery. The Qatrawani shrine, typical of Islamic shrines from the Mamluk-Ottoman period, was built atop an ancient, abandoned monastery. Key elements of the site include the shrine building, remnants of the church, parts of the surrounding wall, a cave, and a well.
The site's history reveals two main phases of inhabitation: the first phase, dating back to the Byzantine period, includes the church, well, and cave; the second phase, from the Mamluk-Ottoman period, involves the construction of the shrine and front yard, as well as the reuse of the original well and cave.
The shrine holds significant importance for both Muslims and Christians in the region. In 1997, the Palestinian Antiquities Department undertook restoration work on the shrine and conducted excavations in the church.
