Shahwan's Synagogue

Shahwan's Synagogue

It dates back to the late sixth or early seventh century AD, to the Byzantine period, and was discovered in Jericho in 1936 AD. All that remains of this synagogue, is a mosaic floor that contains Jewish symbols such as the Ark of the Covenant. There is also the Hebrew inscription “Peace be upon Israel”. After the Oslo Accords of 1995, control of the site was granted to the Palestinian Authority with proper protection. After that, the Jericho municipality renovated the synagogue, whereby Israelis are allowed to visit the temple monthly, starting in 2007.
