Ein Dyuk Synagogue

Ein Dyuk Synagogue

The site is in the village of Ein al-Duyuk, 4 km north of Jericho. In 1921, Vincent and Carrieri supervised excavations that revealed a synagogue (19m x 15m) and a surrounding square. Dating back to the 6th century AD, the site is primarily known for its decorated mosaic floors, as only the wall foundations remain. The synagogue's rectangular basilica layout is divided into three sections, with the widest in the middle and the entrance on the northern side. The mosaic floors feature intricate geometric designs, braids, a zodiac circle, and human figures, some of which have been intentionally altered.

The decorations reflect the artistic freedom of the 6th century, though this period of expression was brief.
