Salesian Convent and Church
At the northern edge of Bethlehem stands the imposing Salesian Convent and Church, a colossal complex established by the Salesians of Don Bosco towards the end of the 19th century. This was part of the widespread Italian Salesian mission that extended across the globe, with the local initiative here spearheaded by Father Antonio Belloni, who gained renown among the Bethlehemites as the "father of the orphans" for establishing a small shelter for underprivileged children in 1864.
The expansive Salesian complex encompasses two distinct convents - one for the Salesian Brothers and the other for the Salesian Sisters - as well as a grand church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. But the Salesian presence in Bethlehem extends far beyond just these spiritual and residential spaces. Also contained within the grounds are a technical school, a museum, an artistic center, and a bakery - all of which are dedicated to the holistic development and well-being of local youth.
