Shepherds' Field - Orthodox

The Orthodox Shepherds' Field is located east of Bethlehem in the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour, and it is a site of immense religious significance for the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. It is believed that this field is the location where the angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds and announced the birth of the Lord Jesus, as described in the Gospel.

The Orthodox Shepherds' Field site contains several important structures and archaeological remains: the Church of the Angels' Grotto, an ancient cave carved into the rock that has been converted into a small church, and its floor displays remnants of 4th-century AD mosaics. Excavations at the site have uncovered artifacts and mosaics dating back to the Byzantine era, between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. These include remains of churches, monasteries, and other structures associated with the early Christian communities.

Adjacent to the Shepherds' Grotto is the Church of the Shepherds' Monastery, a new church belonging to the Orthodox denomination, distinguished by its stunning Byzantine-style mural paintings.
