Column Street (Cardo)
Located in the southwestern part of the Old City of Jerusalem, Column Street is part of Roman Jerusalem’s main street, known as the Cardo, which runs from north to south. This street extends from Damascus Gate in the north to David’s Gate in the south. It is clearly depicted on the Madaba Map from the sixth century AD. The section that currently exists was discovered during archaeological excavations in the early 1970s and was built by the Roman ruler Justinian in the sixth century AD.
