Church of the Dormition Abbey
The church is situated atop Mount Zion near the Prophet David Gate, one of the ancient gates of Jerusalem on its southern side. According to Christian tradition, this site is revered as the place where the Virgin Mary was laid to rest before her assumption into heaven. In 1910, the Benedictine Fathers constructed this church to commemorate this significant event, on the site of the original church built by King Constantine in the fourth century AD.
Known as one of the most beautiful churches in Jerusalem, it features a room believed by Christians to be where the Virgin Mary lived after the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
