Church of Saint Mary Magdalene
The beautiful church sits on the slope of the Mount of Olives, overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem within the Garden of Gethsemane. Constructed in 1888 AD by Russian Tsar Alexander III and his brothers, it stands as a memorial to Empress Maria Alexandrovna, designed in the distinct Russian architectural style featuring golden, onion-shaped domes.
From 1864 to 1910, renowned Russian artist Sergei Ivanov was commissioned to paint extensive murals depicting the life of Saint Mary Magdalene. These murals were brought to and hung in the church, serving as a lasting tribute to Mary Magdalene.
