An-Najah National University
An-Najah National University is one of the most prominent Palestinian universities, distinguished by its large student population and diverse academic programs. The university has had a significant impact, graduating and qualifying thousands of students in various fields and specialties. It also plays a vital role in the economic and urban development of the city of Nablus.
The university's history can be traced back to its early stages of establishment in 1918, when it began as Al-Najah School. The school served students from Nablus, other Palestinian regions, and some Arab students, particularly from Algeria. In 1941, the school evolved into An-Najah National College, and in 1965, it became an institute for teacher training, until it was officially designated as An-Najah National University in 1977.
Since then, the university has undergone remarkable expansion, both in terms of student enrollment and academic offerings. Currently, it has nearly 24,000 students across 11 colleges, offering 114 bachelor's degree programs, 70 master's programs, and 9 doctoral programs. Additionally, the university operates 11 institutes and research centers.
The physical infrastructure of the university has also grown significantly to accommodate the increasing number of students and academic programs. The university campus now includes the original campus, the Al-Junaid Campus (the Academy), Hisham Al-Hijjawi College in the east of the city, and the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Khadouri, Tulkarm. The university also operates a hospital in Asira Street, north of Nablus, and boasts several stadiums, sports facilities, a closed arena, and a library that houses over 269,000 books and half a million electronic copies of course materials.
An-Najah National University has established itself as a prominent institution within the academic community. It has joined the Association of Arab Universities and obtained membership in the Mediterranean Universities Union. The university is governed by a Board of Trustees, composed of distinguished legal personalities, and is led by the university's presidency.
The university has produced numerous prominent Palestinian academic and leadership figures, and it has played a crucial role in the Palestinian national movement.
